In 1733 Thomas Brown, manager at Merryweather & Whitaker's Greenholme Mill at
Burley in Wharfedale told the factory Commissioners.
" We colonised the mill originally and have several hundred apprentices from
London, we now have a sufficient supply in the neighbourhood "
However movement was not all one way. One of the original partners who set
up the mill in 1792, George MERRYWEATHER, decided to leave the partnership
and move his spinning interests to Manchester, taking with him 190 young
workers.
The Halifax Journal for Feb 1810 records the amazing sight of the uniformed
girls and boys marching through Halifax on their way across the Pennines.
