A younger brother was Francis 1784-1864 Rector of Cole Orton. Henry was educated at Reading School, called to the Bar 5 May 1853. Recorder of Reading, Attorney General to Adelaide Queen Dowager. Received the Degree of D.C.L. from the University of Oxford 12th June 1839, Elected Town Clerk of London 23rd June 1842. By accepting this appointment, here linquished a 5,000 Pound income at the Bar. It was said of those who knew him, that the office of Town Clerk, had never been filled with such dignity as in his time. He appeared on behalf of the Corporation, in the Court of Chancery and elsewhere on several occasions, and defended their interest with great learning and ability. He resigned the Office of Town Clerk on the 10th Feb. 1859 and died at his family seat of Castleford near Calne, Wilts., 22 July 1864, in his 84th year.
The Serjeant's principal work is, "The History of the Boroughs and Municipal Corporations of the United Kingdom" published in three octavo volumes in 1835 and of the corporate right of Electors.

In the Town Hall at Devizes is a Marble Bust to Henry Merewether, Recorder of Devizes for 30 years.

In the Alumni Oxonienses by J Foster he is given as the first son of Henry of Calne, Armorial.

In the Church of St Martin, Westminster, London. are Deposited the remains of Eliza Maria, Daughter of Thomas Lockyer Esquire of Wembury House, Devon, and the beloved wife of Henry Alworth Merryweather Sergeantat Law of White Hall Place, Westminster and of this Parish.
She was exemplary in all the relations of life A dutiful child and affectionate wife and tender mother, warm in friendship, active in benevolence. Deeply sensible of his loss after XXVIII years of uninterrupted Connubial happiness the husband has erected this monument. She died June XXIII, MDCCCXXXVII aged XLV years. four sons died before their mother six sons and two daughter survive.
From the above she (Died June 23 1837 aged 45)= birth 1792 thus age 17 at marriage. this differs from other sources that gives birth at 1782 and death at 1864 !

Wheelers Manchester Chronicle 13 Nov 1841 Death Notices, gives this account.
On the 5 September, aged 23years, in Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope, John Robert Merewether, third son of Mr Sergeant Merewether. As first Officer of the ship Bucephalus this humane and intrepid young man had during the night made three trips to a wrecked emigrant ship the Prince Rupert in the course of which he succeeded in saving the lives of thirty persons, returning a fourth time to complete his benevolent purpose the boat was swamped.
NOTE some errors in the Newspaper report I.e. Fathers Rank given instead of name, and given as third son when in fact he was the fourth son.M v Edward Christopher MERRYWEATHER was born on 12 Feb 1820. He died on 30 Oct 1893.
