From Folkestone Chronicle (South Eastern Gazette) 27 May 1865 the following!
Tenterden-A DUMB FUNERAL-LIBERAL CHURCHMEN-A correspondent says:- On Tuesday the 18th instant the body of a young woman, aged 16 daughter of a Labourer named DUBLEY was buried in the new burying ground without ceremony, the Rev Henry Robert Merewether the Vicar, having refused to perform the burial service in consequence of the deceased, who belonged to the Baptist congregation, not having been baptised. We understand that on a brother of the deceased calling upon the Rev Seaman Beale upon the subject, the Rev Gentleman supported Mr Mereweather's refusal, and that"Baptism was the gate to the Kingdom of Heaven, as much as the turnpike-gate was the way to Rolvenden". Previous to the internment the body was taken to the Baptist Chapel and some portions of the scripture were read and a short address delivered by the Rev H Stenbridge the newly-appointed Baptist Minister.
To give this Perspective We Have included another piece from the same News Paper. Police Report Thursday 25th May 1865- Before James Tolput Esq. George Jeffery, a youth, was fined one shilling and costs, or three months imprisonment, unless paid, for ringing a bell in the High Street.

Letter from Coleorton Hall 2 Nov 1823
The Rector here is (Francis Merewether) Mr Merewether,s (John Later Deanof Hereford AM172*) Uncle, he seemed ardent to talk about your late curate at Gillingham, However I was guarded and said nothing to be referred. He has a bad opinion of his nephew and thinks he will never do any good. He is a great player and always played for money. A curacy was vacant here here but the Gentleman would not have him near.
