Alfie Merryweather was employed as a painter in the Dockyard (Chatham) during the early years of the 20th century. at just four feet (1.22m...0tall he was reputedly the shortest man ever to work in the dockyard. Alfie Merryweather died aged 81 years on the 23rd December 1935.Alfie is shown in the painting wearing a 'fearnought'jacket of the type issued to dock land workers although Alfie's jacket had to be made specially to fit his small frame! The artist P.V.Jarvis was employed in the Painters Department at Chatham Dockyard, serving as inspector from 1930 to 1935,He painted this portrait of Alfie during this period. Swanborough Hundred; Cheverall Burnell (to distinguish it from CheverellHales) Edward Merewether tenanted the demise of Burnell manor in 1438 ata rent of 10 pounds per annum the farmer i.e. Edward then received 2pounds and 8 pence in rent from 10 holdings and cottages within the demise, and members of the same family remained tenants until cer 1480 when they became tenants of Hales Manor. John Sherriff was lessee in theearlier 15th century then to the Harris family.
Cheverall Hales Hundred; in in 1426 by Roger Herbard and there after by various farmers until 1480 when a John Merewether worked the demise. a branch of the family remained resident there as tenants of Heytesbury Hospital until the later 17th century.
Known Lessees of Hales Manor include John Merewether the Elder (died1583) who was granted a lease by Ken Testbury in 1569, his son John the younger (AM499) (John the Younger died 1613) and Grandsons John (AM509)(died 1626) Richard (Am505) )will proved 1633) and Jeffery (AM503) (died1663).
In 1654 Jeffery Merewether (AM503) Surrendered his lease and Hey Tesbury granted it to Prisilla Merewether (AM512)(died 1672) Priscilla was the Widdow of his brother Richard Merwether (AM505), she surrendered the lease cer 1669 when James & Richard Townsend acquired it.
