Location: Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is situated on Brisbane River. Brisbane General Cemetery is in Toowong, three miles south-west of Brisbane General Post Office.
Historical Information: With graving docks capable of accommodating destroyers and fueling facilities, Brisbane became a naval base during the 1939-1945 War. Upon the entry of Japan into the war fixed defenses were provided and manned and American detachments arrived and established themselves there. Allied Air Forces Headquarters, a Central Intelligence Unit and the Headquarters of the G.O.C. in Chief, Australian Military Forces were in Brisbane, and in July 1942 the American Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces South-West Pacific Area, moved his headquarters from Melbourne to Brisbane to be nearer the scene of the operations in Papua and New Guinea. There are now over 250, 1914-18 war and over 100, 1939-45war casualties commemorated in this site. The great majority of the graves are in the Returned Servicemen's Plot in Portion 10.

Obituary: IT'S a gruesome CV: Detective Senior Sergeant Jim Lyons has hunted the killers of more than 60 people during the last 28 years.
The trail of death has taken him from one end of the country to the other, from hidden graves and butchered corpses to High Court dramas, but now he's to begin a new career.
Some of those murders, though, will stay engraved on his memory forever.
The execution of Massey University student Craig Merryweather is one.
"I think that was the most cold-blooded murder I ever dealt with," Mr Lyons said.
Twenty-year-old Craig David Merryweather was shot dead on August
17, 1987, on the side of the road in Lindis Pass. His body, buried in a shallow grave, was found two years later after a Crimewatch programme provided new evidence.
His assailants were escorted to the Lindis Pass by police to locate his body.
Duncan Robin Mitchell, Jason Bryan Dermer and the third man, Tony John Wilkins, already serving a life sentence for another murder, received life imprisonment in 1990 for the murder.
