(written 1901) THE late Mr. Henry Merryweather, the youngest son, joined his father's staff in the year 1868, when he was 22 years of age. He was admitted a partner in 1872, and hoisted his flag at the factory in York Street Lambeth. He was a man of unusual energy and great industry, who insisted upon all occasions in understanding thoroughly every subject he took up, and who never neglected the smallest point in dealing with it.
Nothing was unimportant to him, and he never forgot or over looked anything. Everybody except the idle and negligent found it a pleasure to work with him. He could discover an element of humour in the driest of tasks, and being, like his brothers, of a kindly disposition, and always more willing to think well than ill of a man, those with whom he had constantly to do entertained for him a high degree of affection. His name will always be associated with the introduction into England of steam power on tramways, in which he took a deep personal interest which was not limited to the mere pecuniary aspect of the subject. When the question of employing steam on road tramways was first under consideration he conducted some of the earliest trials, including those of the Grantham combined car, which was constructed by the firm. Five years later) in 1877, he gave evidence before the Select Committee of the House of Commons appointed to enquire into the whole subject, and he took a prominent part in the valuable experiments which were made in the presence of the Committee with the first detached tramway engine constructed. These experiments took place upon the Stratford and Leytonstone line. Mr. Henry lived to see the manufacture of steam tramway engines advance through all the experimental stages, and he died before steam had been forced - to give Way to electricity and other forms of motive power. He was an associate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and a Fellow of the Geological Society. His death occurred on December 29th,1881 at the early age of thirty-five years1 from the after effects of a severe attack of typhoid fever, to the very great .regret, not only of a arge circle of private friends, but of every one of his staff who had personal relations with him.
