A Mr and Mrs. Merryweather were the Superintendent and Housekeeper of the London Hammam in Jermyn Street from about 1869 or '70. If these are the same people, then this was the foremost Turkish bath in the country at this time. But It is not known how long they stayed. They were still there in 1872 and got bonuses at Christmas for very satisfactory work.
Perhaps they had left and were working at another establishment by1881because the superintendents usually lived on the premises, it being a considerable addition to their wages.
What is known so far is that Mr M was Superintendent in 1870 and has probably been there since the baths re-opened after alterations in the previous year. A previous employee had stolen some money and new procedures were now to be observed:
A memorandum dated 26 November documents new procedures [in the wake of the Hunt affair?] for dealing with the company's cash.
In essence, Mr Merryweather (Super intendant) will receive the cash from the Baths and the Cafe each evening and hand them over to Mr Waugh (Acting Secretary) the following morning who will bank it. The same procedure will apply to rents and other sums due to the Company by gentlemen [!] occupying Chambers. Weekly wages will be paid every Saturday, and salaries to the 'Servants of the Company will be paid when due, by Mr Waugh. Then in 1872: ... at Christmas, a week's wages extra was to be paid to all household servants; the Housekeeper, Mrs Merryweather, was to be paid an additional £10 per annum; a month's salary to be additionally paid to Mr Waugh and Mr Merryweather.
