Rev J.W.Merryweather, M.A.
The Rev James White Merryweather carries his years well. He has 59 of them, but is so stalwart and vigorous that few would suspect him of quite so many. And if these qualities characterise him physically, they are non the less noticeable about his work and his religious opinions. He is one of the leading Protestants in Sheffield, and chairman of the Executive Committee of the Sheffield Branch of the National Protestant League. He was Educated at Whiston School and Trinity College, Dublin; B.A. in 1874,M.A in 1877; Deacon in 1873, and priest in 1874. He was curate at Monckton Coombe, Nr Bath, from 1873 to 1874, and was then appointed Vicar Deacons orders. in 1877 he went to Carbrook, as curate-in-charge, and the following year on the death of the then vicar, he succeeded to the living. He held the incumbency for 21years during which period reorganized the church life of the parish. For some time after he went there, services were conducted in an Iron church, but he built the present large edifice, which was consecrated in 1891. He also twice enlarged the schools. During the time he was in the parish he raised on an average nearly 1000 pound a year for church work. After doing all this he elected in 1899 to take up the work of a parish twice as large- St Philip's which has a population of 21,000. The people of Carbrook were sorry to lose him, and he and his wife, and his daughter, were the recipients of various presentations from the congregation and the different agencies connected with the church. Mr Merryweather's public work has been of an educational character. He was urged in 1885, 1888,1891, 1894, to stand for school board, and finally consented in 1897. He was returned at the head of the poll by a majority of more than 10,000votes due to the splendid way in which the working man of all shades of opinion in politics and religion supported him. in 1900 he wasre-elected. He was one of the original members of the Education Committee. Is chairman of the training School of Cookery and Domestic Economy Sub Committee, deputy chairman of the School Management Committee, Residence: St Philip's Vicarage.
