From the Book
MR. HENRY MEREWETHER, O.B.E., F.R.C.S., very kindly sent me the following interesting account of the Wiltshire branch of the Merywether Family:--
My grandfather was born in 1820; he was the son of Henry Alworth Merewether, D.C.L. of Calne. He went out to Australia as soon as he came down from Oxford, as A.D.C. and private secretary to Sir George Gibbs and later settled there, Orbit. 1893. My grandfather had six sons, and most of them produced a boy or two. I was born in 1903; My father being second son of (E. C. Henry Alfred Mitchell). My father was born in 1860,Orbit. 1916. My elder brother went to Osborne, and after service in the1914-18 war, retired and settled in South Africa, he has two sons, both of whom are in England. I came over from Australia in 1928 and somehow settled here.
Mr. E. C. Merewether arrived in the colony in 1838 as aide- de-camp to Sir George Gipps, who was Governor of New South Wales 1838-46. He was afterwards aide-de-camp to Sir Charles Fitzroy, who was Governor 1846-55,and private secretary to Sir William Denison who was then Governor. On relinquishing the last position he was appointed Commissioner for Crown Lands and Gold- fields in the New England district. Subsequently he held the post of clerk to the Executive Council, and in 1859 was entrusted with a mission to the British Government from the New South Wales Government. On his return in 1860 he was appointed General Superintendent of the Australian Agricultural Company, which position he held for about16 years.
He was also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He died on October 30, 1893.
For many years "The Ridge" (which is now a Salvation Army Home) was the home of the Merewether family.
Mitchell Street, in the early days known as the Red Road, was the private drive to "The Ridge," and a gate was hung across the read near the present position of the Estate office.
Owing to the opening of various subdivisions this gate was later rang at the intersection of Mitchell and Ridge Streets, where a house now bears the name "Ridge Gate." As further subdivisions towards the home paddock were opened up, the fence and gate were shifted to the southward of CurryStreet.
The Merewether Estate is now vested in trustees; Messrs. W. D. M.Merewether and Ed. R. H. Merewether. The manager is Mr. B. E. Drew, and the chief clerk Mr. W. Broadfoot,
