On Sunday he was confined to his room, and on Monday he took to his bed. On the 16th physicians were sent for Dr.Merewether of Devizes, whose daughter was mar'd to William Hawkins, and the former came again on the18th and for the last time on Monday the 19th March.
Dr. Merewether enters in his Diary:--
19th March. All glory to God. Between 5 and 6 in ye morning Thomas, late Bishop of Bath and Wells died at Longleat, Wilts. He dozed much the day or two before he died, and what little he spoke was sometimes not coherent, which having been plied with opiates (his power of resisting their administration had one may assume passed away) seemed to be rather the effect of a dream than of distemper. 21 Sept. 1711.
Bishop Ken was present at the death of King Charles the II in his office of Chaplain to the King.
He was consecrated to the See of Bath and Wells. In the reign of King James II he was one of the seven Bishops, who were imprisoned in the Tower of London for refusing to read the King's Declaration of Indulgence. The Bishops were tried by Judge Jeffreys, but acquitted. In the reign of King William and Mary, 1689, he with other Bishops and Clergy refused to break his oath of allegiance to King James II; he was therefore deprived of his Bishopric of Bath and Wells and retired to Longleat in Wiltshire.
