Born Southwell, Nr Newark, Nottinghamshire, This marriage showed that
Henry move a considerable distance from his fathers birthplace.
His marriage brought Henry into relationship with the family of
Spofforth, Reginald was born in 1770. His Uncle Thomas was the organist
at Southwell Minster, and it was here that Reginald gained his
experience. Reginald was a currier's son and was born in Southwell. At
the age of 57 he had established his fame as a Glee writer. He went to
London, where he won two prizes offered in 1793 by the one-time famous
"Nobleman's Catch Club" for a new glee which he called "Hail! Smiling
Morn". He also wrote "See! Smiling from the Rosy East" and "Where are
those Hours". Reginald Spofforth, was a cousin of Sarah Clarke of Kirk
Leys, Averham Park from whom Elizabeth was descended. Reginald Spofforth
died in London in 1827.
