Known Lessees of Hales Manor include John Merewether the Elder (died
1583) who was granted a lease by Ken Testbury in 1569, his son John the
younger (AM499) (John the Younger died 1613) and Grandsons John (AM509)
(died 1626) Richard (Am505) )will proved 1633) and Jeffery (AM503) (died
1663).
In 1654 Jeffery Merewether (AM503) Surrendered his lease and Hey Tesbury
granted it to Prisilla Merewether (AM512)(died 1672) Priscilla was the
widow of his brother Richard Merwether (AM505), she surrendered the lease
cer 1669 when James & Richard Townsend acquired it.
Members of the Merewether family, farmers of Hale Manor also held small
free holds in the parish John Merewether the younger (died)1613 had one
and a half virgates of land which passed to his son and namesake (died
1626). Thomas the Brother of John (died 1613) also had a small freehold
which passed at his death in 1602 to his son, another Thomas, then a minor
VCH Vol 10 Wiltshire; Cheverell Hales contained 200 acres of arable land
etc and Huze Merewether was in 1542 the demise farmer.
