We can see the direct influence of eccentric biographies on Dickens's
delineations of character and habit formation in Our Mutual Friend
(1864-65). When Mr. Boffin becomes obsessed with reading about misers, he
begins to collect eccentric biographies and to recount stories of misers
that appeared regularly in this genre. Dickens's library contained a
number of these works, including R. S. Kirby's six-volume The Wonderful
and Scientific Museum or, Magazine of Remarkable Characters (1803-20),
Henry Wilson and James Caulfield's three-volume Wonderful Characters;
Comprising Memoirs and Anecdotes of the Most Remarkable Persons of Every
Age and Nation (1821), and F. Somner Merryweather's Lives and Anecdotes
of Misers; or the Passion of Avarice Displayed (1850).
