Philip Sidney Jarrett MEREWETHER, born Hereford Deanery, January 26th,
1833, at 1/2 past 12 (?am). Christened at Hereford Cathedral June 7th,
1833. His sponsors were Sir Phillip Sidney, now Baron de Lisle of
(P?hust), Kent, William Wightman Esquire (?Barrister at Law) now Sir
William one of the Judges of (illegible) Place London, and Mrs Jarrett of
(illegible). (whole sentence illegible).
Phillip Sidney Jarrett (Sidney) MEREWETHER, left England on the fully
rigged ship, Canterbury. The Canterbury sailed from the East India Docks,
London, on June 18th, 1851, and arrived at Lyttleton, in New Zealand on
October 21st, without making landfall on the journey. The years between
his arrival here and his death in Sydney, in 1896, where he and his
eldest son were attending the affairs of Sidney's recently deceased older
brother are mysterious to say the least.
According to a "Copy of Register of Marriage" from the register of
marriages in the district of Hokitika, "Philip Sidney Merewether", miner,
married "Helen Pirrie", domestic, on September 20th, 1887, at the office
of the Registrar of Marriages, Hokitika.
Sidney and Helen, had 6 children:
Mary Ann MATHERS has written that Sidney lived in New Zealand under the
name "Charles MURRAY" and stated that she held a birth certificate in the
name MURRAY.

Helen Pirrie possibly was born in Hokitika, New Zealand. According to
her marriage certificate she was born in Malta, but on her death
certificate it states Dundee, Scotland. Her father was a soldier so
maybe they were Scottish and were stationed there. Helen Pirrie died on
17 September 1896 in Hokitika and is buried in Stafford Cemetery. It also
states in Sidney's will that he was also known and called Charles Murray.
