The BERESFORD is probably a family name. The BERESFORD name came to
Ireland at the time of the Plantation of Ulster, Tristra Beresford being
manager of the London Co. they settled at Coleraine. Their later
connection with County Waterford arose from an alliance with the de la
Poer Family. John BERESFORD 1739-1805 whose mother was a de la Poer
exercised almost unlimited political influence which he employed in
suppression of the 1798 Insurrection and in furthering the passing of the
Act of Union. He should also be remembered for the fact that many of the
best architectural features of Dublin can be attributed to his efforts.
In the 19th century the Beresford's distinguished themselves rather in
the service of the British Empire than in that or Ireland. The family is
now represented by the Marquisate of Waterford. ( This was from a book on
Ireland printed in 1908.
