Notes for Paul Otis:

Paul Otis (1787-1855/19 November 1856) was my great-great-grandfather.
I would offer the following in correction of the entry in your genealogy.
Even though William A. Otis lists Paul's wife as Maria VanHaseltine, our
best evidence indicates that the name in this era was either
Aseltine/Aseltein (both forms are used by the family after they moved to
Dansville, Ingham, Michigan and the differences exist to this day). The
Aseltine family lived in the Claverack, New York area before moving to
Swanton, Vermont.
No proof of the marriage in St. Albans has been found, but we do know
that all of Paul and Maria's children then living were baptised in the
Caldwell Anglican Church, near Foucault, Quebec, Canada in 1826. Paul was
listed as a farmer at Foucault. This is just a few miles over the border
from St. Albans, Vermont. The baptismal record records my
great-grandfather as Philander Asselstine Otis and his twin as Philo
Asselstine Otis.
William A. Otis' account of Paul's move to Michigan is supported by
census and property records.
In January 1843, Paul purchased property in Section 2, Ingham Township,
Ingham, Michigan. The 1850 Census shows Sally Otis still living in Ingham
County. Paul died and is buried in the Dansville Cemetery, Ingham,
Michigan. His tombstone shows 1855; however, his widow, Sally applied
for a Civil War pension based on one their children and listed his death
date as 19 November 1856.
Sincerely,Charles Otis Harthy
