Notes for George Lane Cockburn Merewether:

George Lane C MEREWETHER was supposed to have left India 1878
I received a letter from a John JOHNSTONE 22 Mar 1997. He has a letter
written by GLC 1896. It reads:
In my last letter which was timed to reach London Dec 10 I forgot to sent
you the compliments of the season, being greatly bothered in various
ways. Perhaps you can tell me what those brothers want. In that letter,
too he gave me a copy of the list of poor Charles belongings, which list
a Mr. McCarthy had sent to him. Also a copy of the McCarthy Letter to him
about a parcel addressed to Charles in the Sydney Post Office, a
registered letter in Armidale P O. and a letter book parcel at his place
(McCarthy). I sent him a letter, in his reply to this, on 10th Jan which
you must have received probably about 20th Feb. In yr letter of 3rd Feb.
you wrote that you had received mine to him 13 Dec with L10 draft. You
will have had all the letters I wrote to him about poor Charles death and
settlement of his affairs, except, perhaps one written on 8th Nov the day
after he heard from S of C's death. Which is probably reached Sidney Abt.
20 of Dec before he left for Sydney. The letter tho, he probably showed
to you or told you about, and you would probably have it now. This being
so you know what my views and intentions were in settling up Charles
affairs. I told him I would pay all of the expenses of Charles stay in
Hospital, funeral sent on 13th of Dec, sent the L10 on account of the
expenses which as Mr McCarthy wrote amounted to L19.10, as below. I only
sent L10 of this because I thought there might be some balance at the
Union Bank of Australia, to go towards, these expenses, and if I sent the
whole L 19 at once there might be something over to returned to me, and
that give trouble to poor Sidney, there being no bank nearer than
Hokitika.
He left India 1878. He had been in British service 22 years
